I Couldn’t Find Comfortable Huaraches
Huarache sandals are one of my favorite styles, but the pointy narrow shape always hurt my feet! My half-Mexican mom also loves traditional huaraches, but with bunions they were uncomfortable for her too. We used to blame our feet, but then I thought “why not change the shoe?”
Since then I’ve made it my life’s work to find comfortable alternatives to shoes that hurt. For years I was on the hunt for craftspeople who would be interested in reimagining this traditional shoe with a natural foot shape. I wanted huaraches that actually fit wide feet!
That search led me to Diego and Cristina, a Colombian husband and wife duo who founded Origo shoes – a brand built on the same ideals as Anya’s Reviews!
We combined forces and began the process of prototypes and planning so that we all can enjoy this beautiful style without our toes being squished. After a year of working with local Mexican artisans and weavers we were finally able to bring beautiful barefoot huarache sandals directly to you! And since then, we’ve added a Woven Ballerina style to the collection.
A Little Huarache History – The woven huarache (wa-ra-chay) design is indigenous to Mexico and born from Aztec culture. Hundred of years ago they were worn as a work shoe by farmers because they can be repaired repeatedly and are breathable for long hot days!

Our huaraches are made in the traditional way in Michoacán, Mexico – but with a few upgrades! Instead of a pointy, narrow toe they have a natural shape to them with space for the feet to spread out. Plus, a lighter and more flexible sole than is typically used, with a soft cushioned footbed.
The shoes are entirely made of leather with a flexible rubber outsole on the bottom. All the leather is vegetable tanned and chrome free so you can safely wear them on bare feet. The flexible 3mm outsole is made of natural rubber with texture for grip. Elegant simplicity.
Sandal Version With Buckle
The sandal variation of these huaraches has a buckle strap that keeps the foot securely in place, making them adjustable for a variety of foot types – these ones fit my low volume feet and narrow heels best! The Huarache Sandals comes in black, cinnamon in sizes US women’s 6-11.5.
I wear mine on the tightest buckle and gave them many miles of testing all over European cobble stones. They are incredibly comfortable! If you also have low volume feet and/or narrow heels, this might be be a more secure fit than the slip-on.
Slip-On Version
The most traditional version of the huarache – the slip-on – comes in two widths and the full range of sizes for both men and women! This shoe can be worn during spring, summer, & fall with everything from shorts & jeans to dresses.
Because slip-ons can be a little harder to fit, and we believe a good fit is important for healthy walking, we have provided an optional ankle tie in both widths. You can wear it with the tie for extra security so the huaraches don’t slip off your heel, or you can remove the tie and wear them as a true slip-on. You can also add a heel grip to the back for a more tailored fit (this is what I do!).
Huaraches in Wide
The wide version of the Huaraches has an overall roomier fit than the regular version and comes in larger sizes, so is better suited for wider, higher volume and larger feet. This model also has a few extra leather pieces woven in so it covers a little more of the foot on the top and the sides than the regular, and the slip-on version comes with the optional ankle strap. You can find the wide huaraches in both slip-on and buckle sandal style! Let’s dig a little deeper into the sizing and fit for each of these models.
Huarache Sizing & Fit
The woven construction and special huarache leather means that these will stretch and mold to your feet with wear. You want them to be a big snug when brand new. Below are the sizing and fit details for the two Huaraches widths, each with a unique fit. But my recommendation is to go with the smaller size if in-between.
Regular Huaraches
The regular Huarache by Anya is available in the Huarache Sandal and Slip-on in sizes US women’s 6-11.5, and fits as follows:
- True to size
- Medium to wide width
- Medium volume
That means these shoes should fit both average and some wide feet well.
Wide Huaraches
The wide version of the Huaraches by Anya is available in slip-on and sandal style in sizes US women’s 6.5 – men’s 13 and fits as follows:
- Mostly true to size, but slightly big overall
- Wide to extra wide
- Medium to high volume
The Huaraches in wide are wider in the toe box, slightly longer and higher volume compared to the regular width. This means that this version is best for thick, wide, and high volume feet.

Why are they so snug?
Like in traditional huaraches, the leather will mold to your feet as you wear them so it’s ok if they feel snug when brand new. Because of this stretching and molding of the leather many people with extra wide feet will able to get a good fit as well! If you have low volume feet and narrow heels the sandal variation with the buckle will likely be the best option.
I am able to wear a size 6.5 regular width in these, which is my usual US shoe size for this style of shoe. If you have low volume feet and/or narrow heels I would consider erring on the smaller side so they feel secure, particularly in the slip-on variation.

What grade of leather do these use? “Natural” is a squishy term.
Are you asking if it’s top grain or full grain? The natural comes from the tanning process – these are vegetable tanned without the use of chemicals.

Really excited to find wide huaraches! I’m interested in the Huarache Slip-On. My feet are 23.6 cm x 9cm with high volume/instep. I typically go for lace up styles for the room they allow for. I’m waffling between a 7 wide and 7 regular. What size would you recommend?

Hi! I would love an opinion on sizing for the huarache slip-on. My feet measure at 25.2cm and 25.4cm, which makes me think I should get a 39 regular, which is my typical size, but I’m torn as I sometime size down to a 38 for some sandals. However, I’m concerned the leather will stretch out too much and they’ll get too loose if I get a 39. Thoughts?
What is your foot volume and heel thickness? If you have a lower volume foot with slimmer heels, then I’d recommend sizing down. If you are medium volume and medium width then you may be able to go either way. They can stretch quite a bit.
What size would you recommend for both options? My feet are 24″ long and 10″ wide with a low-medium volume. I dont really like a tight fit on the tips of my toes so im debating sizing up. Thank you!
Hi Irma, I’d go with a size 7.5 for the slip-on. It needs to be a snug fit or they will stretch out with wear and not stay on. If you don’t want a snug fit, I’d go with the sandal style because it is more secure. Then you could size up to an 8.
Hi Anya, wondering if you might provide sizing advice. My foot measures 9.5″ long. I have a size 7.5 in the regular width. My toes don’t hang off the edge but they do touch. The shoes are brand new. Do you recommend staying with this size because of the stretch, or going up to a size 8?
They stretch a bunch! I would stick with this size if they are snug. Lots of people who get a bigger size end up regretting it.
They look beautiful, is there any plans for a non leather option in the future ?
Not currently. I am not sure it’s possible to keep all the properties of a huarache in a vegan material…it wouldn’t mold to your foot the same. So it would require a substantial redesign.
These look beautiful and comfortable but I need to know what animal is the leather made from? I had an allergic reaction from calf leather.
Hi Linda. It is cow leather. The leather type is called vaqueta, which is a specific processing especially for huarache sandals.
Looking at getting the buckle/sandal style. My feet measure 22.8cm and 23cm. The widths are 8.2 and 8cm. I was thinking the 6 but that only give me .5cm on the longer foot, debating the 6.5 but worried may be too much? What size would you reccomend?

Hi Amanda, you can get away with a little more space in the sandal/buckle style since it’s more secure to your foot so I don’t think the 6.5 would be too long. If you prefer a closer fit, you could also wear the 6 since these are meant to be snug and stretch out with wear.
Hi, I bought the huarache sandals. They are super pretty and high quality! However I’m having an issue with the heel strap… My heel hangs out of the back of the sole. I can’t tighten the strap any more because the V shape of the strap. My feet rests too far back in the shoe. It’s uncomfortable and I worry I will have the same problem even in a bigger size.
My feet measure 25cm long, and I got the 8.5 regular, so according to the size chart, the sandals measure 25.6cm, which should be long enough.
Do you have any ideas for me? I really want to make these sandals work for me!
Hi Di, I think the shape of the heel strap is just not working great with the anatomy/shape of your heel and ankle. You might try a size down or the slip-on style instead.
These are beautiful! Any plans to bring back the white color? I want a paler color but tan/brown and blush just don’t work on my darker skin tone.
Not currently, but we rotate in new colors seasonally so it’s always an option for the future.
