A collage of barefoot slippers with a wide toe box for ultimate foot comfort
Slippers should be comfortable! And that means plenty of space for your toes.

With holiday season and cold weather here I am ready to cozy up with warm tootsies. You would think that it goes without saying that a house slipper should have plenty of toe space, but so many of mine over the years have been tight in the toes while sliding off my heel! If you’ve struggled to find actually comfortable slippers, you’re in the right place.

Here are my tried-and-true ACTUALLY wide slippers that won’t pinch your feet so you can be cozy and comfy all winter long.

The Best Barefoot Slippers

I work from home (running this website, among other shoe things 🙂 so slippers are kind of a must-have for me. Especially because I live in the Midwest where it’s winter half the year! The following are the all time favorites for myself and Samantha, my lovely wide-footed assistant.

Kingdom of Wow

Wool & Bamboo | Sizes XXS – 3XL | Ships from USA

Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 5% off

These are so dang comfy, I wear my Kingdom of Wow slippers in both cuts all the time. The bamboo ones are not as warm and can be worn a lot of the year. The wool slippers are thicker and warmer, but still light. They have taken the shape of my feet and are just so easy to wear!

Sizing & Fit:

  • True to size – I wear an XS
  • Wide width – the shape conforms to your foot, so they are adaptable for a lot of different shapes. Extra wide feet may spill over the sides.
  • Medium volume – they work on my low volume feet, and will stretch to fit higher volume feet (but might be snug at first)

Softstar Fireside

Suede & Sheepskin | Sizes 5U-13U | 2 Width Options | Handmade in the USA

I have been wearing this same pair of slippers the last 4 or 5 years – they are incredibly comfortable and high quality and very roomy. Over the years they’ve stretched out and now are a little floppy if worn barefoot, but still perfect with warm socks. You can replace the insoles too, which I probably should do soon!

They come in two widths, so are extra wide friendly. Mine are a size 5u wide, which is smaller than I would normally choose for a slipper.

Softstar also makes the Merino Zen slipper, which is a felted wool. They are a nice house shoe! My son likes them.

Sizing & Fit:

  • Should fit snug when new – I recommend getting a size down
  • Fits average, wide and extra wide feet!
  • Medium to high volume fit

Mukishoes Pantufa

Felted Wool | Natural Rubber Outsole | Sizes EU 36-48

Use code ANYAMUKI for 10% off

These are brand new this year but I am already in love. They are so light and comfy, and fit my lower volume feet well. These have a rubber bottom, which can be handy if you need grip on your floors.

I really love my slippers to be secure and not floppy – a common problem for my low volume feet and narrow heels. So it’s great news that these Pantufa slippers stay so secure on my feet.

Sizing & Fit:

  • Runs slightly small – I sized up to a 38, but would normally buy a 37.
  • Medium to wide width – these are unstructured and flexible, so the material spreads out with my foot.
  • Medium volume – they may stretch for high volume feet, but could be tight.

Luks Slippers

2 Width Options | Wool Lined | Rubber Sole | Sizes EU 36-46

These wool slippers also come in two widths and have loads of toe space for even square shaped feet. They are not quite as plush as the Softstar Fireside, but still cozy, warm, and light.

They hold their shape a little better than the sheepskin slippers here, but still run large and high volume.

Sizing & Fit:

  • Runs big, I wear a size down
  • Wide to extra wide fit
  • Medium to high volume

Zeazoo Dolly

Sheepskin | Vibram rubber Outsole | Sizes EU 34-43

Customers outside the US/Canada can get them direct from Zeazoo Kids in the EU and get 5% off with code ANYASREVIEWS.

These slippers are so fluffy!! They are incredibly warm for how light and soft they are. They are quite high volume, so my heel slips a little if I wear them barefoot. But they are delightful and I am looking forward to using them on wintry days. We also love the Zeazoo Dingo boots as indoor/outdoor slippers!

Sizing & Fit:

  • Runs on the roomy side, but true to size for length.
  • Wide width
  • High volume

I have a size 36/37 and they feel looser than other slippers in the same size, but I don’t think I could size down.

Xero Pagosa

Synthetic Fleece | Rubber Outsole | Sizes US Women’s 5-12 & Men’s 6.5-15

These fleece slippers have a rubber bottom and a collapsible heel. They’re super light and flexible and are perfect for Justin who has a plateau shaped foot (first 3 toes are all the same length). For being pretty minimal, they’ve held up surprisingly well with no pilling. They’re the best slipper we’ve found for him!

They are not as warm as some others here, but really functional. They also are pretty secure and not floppy, because they come up high on the foot and have a medium volume instep.

Sizing & Fit:

  • True to size
  • Wide throughout, not suited for extra wide toe splay
  • Medium volume

Verloop

A pair of feet wearing two different slippers from Verloop made from sustainable deadstock yarn. They are colorful and have a wide toe box

Vegan | Fleece Lined | Sizes XS – M/L | Ships from USA

Samantha has these knit slippers and loves them! A bit more cushion to the sole when brand new, but it compresses with just a couple wears. The knit uppers are stretchy and the soles are super flexible with plenty of grip for indoor use. They’re also sustainably made with deadstock yarn and they’re machine washable!

We only recommend the slippers with backs for a secure fit.

Sizing & Fit:

  • True to size
  • Extra wide friendly
  • Medium to high volume

A full list of options

The above are my favorites, but here are a few more good options.

A front view of a pair of feet wearing Wildling Lotus barefoot slippers made of felted wool and a rubber outsole.

Wildling Lotus – Really nice quality slippers! I added an extra Wildling insole for warmth and to fill up some space. The toe box is medium width, but it has molded to my foot and the rubber bottom is good for slippery floors. It can also be found in a low cut version called the Nelus.

Lems Drifter Fur – Cozy lined slip-ons with rubber outsole for either indoor or outdoor use and optional collapsible heel. Justin loves them! They also look cool. Find Men’s Drifter Fur here

  1. Interesting. I’m just getting into barefoot shoes but I’ve been wearing Glerups almost exclusively for seven years (I only wear shoes for an hour a day or less) and I seem to have worsening bunions (not terrible, but I certainly don’t have wide naturally shaped feet). I wonder whether I unconsciously grip the Glerups with my toes as one would flip flops, although mine aren’t overly wide. They seemed so perfect to me, and they’re definitely comfortable, but I now wonder how good they are for my feet.

    1. It definitely is possible that you’re gripping if the Glerups aren’t secure on your foot. In general, slippers (even barefoot friendly ones) aren’t ideal for movement. They’re meant for lounging, so if you walk around a lot in the Glerups it might be causing some issues. But bunions can be caused by more than ill-fitting shoes. Fundamentally, instability in the foot is what leads to the joint moving out, so strength and stability is key. How you roll over the big toe when you walk also can impact it. Gait Happens (check out their Instagram account) and Petra Fisher Movement (also on social media) are great resources to dig deeper into this.

  2. Thanks for your reply! I rarely lounge, I walk around in the Glerups the whole day. Not a great idea, then ;).

      1. Thanks! Shame the UK is a bit behind the US! I realised the other day (as the weather is getting cooler and I can’t walk around the house barefoot anymore) I actually spend most of the time inside in slippers that don’t fit the barefoot ethic (Birkenstocks). It seems brands are missing a trick in this post-covid work-from-home era…

  3. Hello there Anya!

I’m looking for some barefoot indoor sandals or slippers that I can use when I work.
    Do you have any recommendation?

    Best regards
    Mikael

  4. Yes that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Two great options it seems. Did you try any of them or do you have any discount code available?

  5. Hi Anya. Thank you for all of your reviews! Do you know which slippers/moccasins are wide enough to wear with toe socks and correcttoes? I’m wanting an indoor warm shoe that I can wear my spacers with . Thanks!

    1. Hi there! The Softstar Fireside slipper in wide width is plenty wide enough for me to wear toe socks and correct toes with! They start out a little snugger but stretch over time and are the roomiest pair I own.

  6. Hi Anya! Thank you so much for all the energy you put into these reviews and educational posts! I’ve found your ideas so helpful as I buy shoes for my toddler (he ADORES his newest ones), and now of course I’m wondering about my own feet (narrow heel, crazy high arch, been told my whole life I need wild orthotics for pain and support). I’ve started by just trying to go barefoot inside as much as possible. But WOW do I stub my stupid pinky toe ALL THE DANG TIME. OW! Might you have any suggestions for barefoot slippers/house sandals/tiny spacer doohickies that will solidly protect my sad little pinky toes from this constant abuse?

    1. Hi, Anya, Quick question.I was wondering of the brands mentioned in th barefoot house shoe section which would Fit best for a high-medium mountain foot type? Thanks!

  7. People should consider Padraig Cottage slippers. I love these slippers so much that I also wear them outside as shoes when the weather and ground aren’t wet. I recommend adding shoelaces to snug up the fit at the instep and below the ankle (the womens sizes already come with laces installed).

  8. Thanks as always for your very helpful and informative reviews!

I might add LL Bean to your list of companies who make slippers that are not strictly barefoot, but can come close. We always wear slippers inside in our house, and I have some particular requirements for them; because I’m older, and even more because I do some heavy physical caretaking for a disabled family member, I need slippers that will stay securely on my feet and offer some structured support and that will not slip on polished wood floors. Budget is a consideration too; I’m sure the barefoot slippers you review are worth the cost, but I can’t always manage it. When I needed new slippers last fall, I found Bean’s Mountain Slippers were just about perfect: almost zero-drop with minimal arch support and a wide toe box (I ordered a size over my usual to accommodate the fleece lining) and a flexible but sturdy non-slip sole. Only problem is, with spring well underway they are way too warm! So I’m on the hunt again for something for late spring and summer. I will check out some of your recommendations along with Bean’s unlined or leather-lined slippers.
