Why I Don’t Wear “Regular” Chelsea Boots
My feet are important to me, and I am done stuffing them into shoes that don’t respect their natural shape. I wear wide toe box Chelsea boots because:
- They have a wide anatomical toe box that doesn’t squish my toes.
- They are flat (zero drop) and don’t push my weight forward.
- They style the same as regular Chelsea boots!
- You can choose more cushioned options or add insoles if you don’t want a thin sole!
Most standard footwear, like the Chelsea boots on me above right and below right, have a pointy narrow shape and heel that can really hurt! Unlike shoes that claim to be good for wide feet but still come to a point at the end, barefoot and wide toe box boots actually give you the space and the flexibility where you need it.

Gaucho Ninja barefoot boots are unique in this list because they are Goodyear welted for durability and longevity – this is unusual in barefoot shoes and makes them the best for those who will wear their boot year after year after year. Hands down my favorite wide toe box Chelsea boot with cushion is the Lems Chelsea. The barefoot suede version is really lightweight, has a very spacious toe box shape that can fit most foot shapes and widths, and they are soft and cushioned. Justin and I both have had great luck with ours – the quality, fit, and feel are all on point.
If you want durability and support along with the cushion, Also from Lems is the Chelsea Tuff. They are more insulated and the sole is quite thick (makes me feel so tall!) but it flexes at the toe. If you want the wide toe box but an otherwise traditional feeling shoe, these are the best in the list. Perfect for people who want comfort but not barefoot shoes. Very well made, waterproof, and on a grippy practical outsole.
Sizing & Fit:
- Runs small – I wear a size larger because my usual size feels too short
- Extra wide in the Chelsea Suede version, wide to slightly extra wide in the other Chelsea versions
- High volume – These are roomy through the arch and ankle area, so I need to wear thick socks.

If you have low volume feet and narrow heels, this is the best barefoot Chelsea boot for you. I am almost always swimming in pull-on barefoot shoes, but the Vivobarefoot Sensus Chelsea I can wear with no modifications. They come with a removable thermal insole that some people will want to take out (if you’re not quite as low volume as I), and the toe box width is solid! They are not extra wide, but wider fitting than other Vivobarefoot shoes I’ve tried.
They have a really sleek, outfit-completing silhouette that I love. Stylish, and still practical with an outsole that has some grip to it.
Sizing & Fit:
- I find them true to size, but they do run shorter than other Vivo shoes. So some people will want to size up or plan to remove the insole.
- Medium wide in the toe box.
- Low volume fit with insole, medium low volume without insole. Not suitable for thick, extra wide feet.

The Be Lenka Entice is a little more rugged of a Chelsea boot style with a durable outsole. They have an extra wide, fan-shaped fit for those of you who really need all the toe space while still styling like other Chelsea boots.
They are an in-between weight, with some robustness to the sole while still being light. Many people love that extra durability and traction, without them looking too rugged. The quality is great too. Entice 3.0 is just beginning to arrive (the vegan version is in the EU now, the leather version will be coming to EU & US in the next few weeks) with an improved outsole, but the fit and feel is overall the same.

- Extra wide, but fitted through the heel so they can fit slimmer feet too.

These Chelsea boots are feather-light and crazy flexible, but have a really nice appearance to them. There is ample toe box room both in width and in height – that means no toe pinching from any direction, and they are lined with a soft chrome-free natural leather. This is a great option for people sensitive to rubbing and digging.
But because they are so unrestrictive, they fit quite roomy. I add an extra insole to mine and wear thick socks, because they are high volume and will flop around on my skinny heels without that.

I love that the Mukishoes Chelsea is a lower cut than most other wide toe box options, which gives you different styling options – easier to wear with jeans than taller Chelsea boots! They are also very light, flexible, and come with a real wool lining – not too thick, but nice for cold days.
They can get a little wrinkly/frumpy because they are so soft and unstructured, but it doesn’t stop me from styling them with lots of outfits. I reach for them often when I want a quick and easy look that’s still stylish. After a quick break in period, these are glove-like for me. The Mukishoes Chelsea is a unisex model.
The Galocha model from Mukishoes is a rain boot with a stylish look, including a faux heel and higher stack height. They fit wider than their other Chelseas, include a removeable wool insole, and are high volume. Water will come in the elastic panels if you step in a very deep puddle, but are otherwise a very functional, fashionable choice.
Sizing & Fit:
- Slightly small – I have a pair both in my regular size and a size up – both fit but the smaller size is a bit short.
- Medium wide – best for average and some wide feet. The outsole is very soft and can flatten out under wider feet as they break in, but don’t feel super wide when brand new.
- Medium volume – the ankle opening is slim and lower cut, so some people say the front edge cuts into their ankle a bit. But it helps keep the shoe from being floppy even on different instep heights.
Xero Shoes Ridgeway – Cushioned

Xero’s Chelsea boot, the rugged Ridgeway, comes in men’s and women’s sizing. They have a nice style and have been very popular as an all-purpose functional Chelsea with a thicker sole than most barefoot shoes. I personally found them too stiff in the back heel area for my liking, but I am quite sensitive there. Despite this, a lot of people in my community are loving them. They are also slim in the toe box for me.

- True to size for most people, but the Ridgeway ran small for Justin (he wears a 13 but needed 14 in Ridgeway Chelsea).
- Medium to slim width in the toes – Men’s models are wider than women’s.

If I get a vivo barfeoot sensus boots, will there be room for adding an insole? I want to get just one pair of boots that can last a while, has roomy toebox and relatively barefoot. Also, can you please suggest any options with a little bit of sole, like the barebarics zing models? I’m new to barefoot, just got a pair of zing shoes. I have extremely flat feet, so I prefer a bit more sole than true barefoots.
Hi Shahla, I can’t say for certain if you’ll be able to add an insole – this will mostly depend on your foot volume. Lems has some great boots with a more hefty sole.

I need a wide toe box and zero drop but because of hypermobility and Morton’s Neuromas I do better with metatarsal support and some arch support to relieve pressure from the ball of my foot. Can you suggest a wide toe box boot like this? I know you’re a barefoot specialist but sometimes switching to barefoot late in the game doesn’t work. I have a tall pair of Vivos but need more support for comfort all day.

The Vivobarefoot Sensus or Explorer Chelsea would probably be the best balance between durability and ground feel, IMO.

What size did you try for the Shapen VICTORY barefoot Chelsea boots? Their size chart says a size 38 is 24cm in length which seems short compared to their other models.
I totally missed this over the winter (I take time off over the holidays and then have trouble getting caught up again at the beginning of the year!). I have a size 37 and I didn’t feel like they were overly short. Though I agree with you, a size 38 at 24cm does seem short.
