Wide toe box flats for when you want to look chic, without the squished toes.

Barefoot ballet flats and Mary Janes are the perfect shoes for the foot-conscious diva with taste. I reach for this style more than any other in my closet, because they are the perfect outfit completer that transcends the rapid trend cycle and will always have you looking classy. If you want to dress like a Parisian without suffering foot pain, this is the article for you.

Here are my personal favorite wide toe box flats, with options in a range of prices and widths. Because here we celebrate the natural foot!

What Are Barefoot Flats?

A wide toe box Mary Jane is designed to match the actual shape of your foot. And look cute too.

We all know flats are more comfortable than heels. But have you looked at the toe box shape on the flats in your closet? So many are tiny and pointy, clearly not designed with your shape in mind. You can be more comfortable in your cute shoes!

This is what I look for in a barefoot ballet flat or Mary Jane (and what every shoe featured here has). I want flats that are:

  • Shaped like a foot – No toe squish!
  • Zero drop – No heel whatsoever.
  • Secure to the foot – No flopping.

Most flats actually have a small heel! I look specifically for zero drop flats, like the ones above because it makes my back happier.

The features of a barefoot ballet flat ensure that I am truly comfortable, which for me is a top priority. It means I am not kicking off my shoes every chance I get, and can truly enjoy myself while looking cute. Intrigued by this idea? Head here to read more about how barefoot shoes might help resolve your foot issues.

Find Perfect-For-You Flats

Because we all have uniquely shaped feet (and what’s good for one person might be terrible for another), I share important fit info for each wide toe box flat reviewed here – so you can choose the one best suited for your foot type.

Here are a few fit tips to help you find the perfect barefoot flat:

  • Keep a few pairs of heel grips on hand for heel slippage.
  • Consider adding an insole to improve fit or add cushion.
  • Choose options with a strap if you have stubborn fit issues.

The Top 10 Best Barefoot Ballet and Mary Jane Flats

Below you’ll find the top 10 most versatile, high quality, and best fitting wide toe box flat options on the market.

Origo Shoes

4 photo collage of 4 different styles of Origo Shoes Mary Janes barefoot flats with wide toe boxes in trendy designs.

Use code ANYA for 10% off

Origo takes the cake when it comes to the Mary Jane category. They are the most fashion forward of the wide toe box options, and have a feminine cut that is fitted through the heels. I even have my own Woven Ballerina Mary Jane collaboration with Origo that I am quite partial to (and that keeps selling out so I think I’m not the only one….).

All options from Origo are very classic and chic, with good toe box width, good durability, and a good price point. They strike the perfect balance between everything I am looking for in my flats collection. Below are just a few of the real-life outfits I’ve worn with my Origo Mary Janes.

A four photo collage showing different stylish outfits on the same woman, all with a different pair of barefoot mary janes from Origo Shoes

Sizing & Fit Type:

  • True to size – My feet are roughly 23 cm and 9cm wide, and I wear a 6.5.
  • Medium wide – slightly wider than average, but not quite extra wide.
  • Medium volume, with a removable insole for versatility (in all models except the Woven Ballerinas).

Shapen Barefoot – Extra Wide Friendly

4 photo collage showing different Shapen Barefoot flats, all with a wide toe box and flat flexible outsole.

Use code ANYAS10 for 10% off full-priced items, or code ANYA5 for an extra 5% off discounted items from the EU store. Note that they don’t accept returns outside the EU, which is why we also carry Shapen at Anya’s Shop in the US!

Shapen carries my favorite elegant barefoot ballet flats that can easily replace high heels. Of all the options on this list, they are the best for fancy occasions. They have those extra special details to make a statement and take the look up a notch. Shapen also makes Wide versions in their dressiest flats, which is great for my extra wide friends.

The Orchid (below left) is my personal favorite from Shapen, followed by the Poppy (below right). They really make dressing up so much more enjoyable! Again, these are just a couple of ways I’ve worn them. Both are closet regulars!

Shapen also has some more casual but still adorable Mary Jane style shoes. The Coco is a winner for me (coming to Anya’s Shop this fall), and I like the Neeja.

Sizing & Fit:

  • The Orchid, and Poppy run long and I recommend ordering a size down! Neeja runs a little long, and Coco is the most true to size.
  • All Shapen flats come in a regular and wide. Regular fits average and slim feet best. Wide fits wide and extra wide feet best. The Neeja and Coco only come in one width, which I consider to be medium width.
  • Works for most foot volumes, because so much of the shoe is open. But those with really thick, high volume feet might find that the straps are barely long enough.
  • No removable insole, and can be quite thin for some people. I have added an insole to mine when wearing them to events.

I’d say the trickiest thing about Shapen is that the sizing and fit is all over the place between models. I identified my 4 favorite flats here with specific fit info, but note that it doesn’t apply to every Shapen model. And this is why we carry Shapen in the US, for easier shipping and returns for US customers.

Jenon Leather – Extra Wide Friendly

You can use code JENON11 to get 10% off the One Strap Villet!

The Jenon Leather Villet is an enduring favorite of mine. Each pair is handmade in a small workshop in the Czech republic. They come with a lightly cushioned insole, and have a lovely toe box shape that is both wide and tall, so your toes don’t get smashed from any angle. They are wide enough to fit extra wide friends (Samantha approved!), but also secure and comfortable on my medium width, low volume feet. They’ve been a bestseller for us ever since we got them in a couple of years ago.

They have a more structured look to them that I really like (not baggy), but they don’t rub anywhere and I’ve found them so comfortable and cute. The two strap version is a custom model exclusively made for Anya’s Shop, but you can order the one strap Villet in more colors (they do custom pairs!) directly from Jenon Leather in the EU.

Sizing & Fit:

  • True to size – I can wear both a size 36 & 37.
  • Wide to extra wide toe box shape, but still secure through the midfoot and heel.
  • Fits low to high volume, but high volume feet may need to remove the insole (it’s lightly glued in and technically not designed to be worn without it. So remove at your own risk).

Xero Shoes

The Xero has two knit flats that I quite like, and they are one of the most affordable cute wide toe box options out there. The Phoenix Knit comes in solid basic colors as well as the fun leopard I have on here. They are perfect as a simple dress shoe, and the knit is very comfortable

The material can stretch a bit, and they’re a little loose on narrow heels. So if that’s a concern for you I’d recommend the Cassie Knit. The velcro strap puts them on the casual end of the spectrum, but I find them quite cute and easy to wear. Xero also sells a leather Phoenix, that I don’t love quite as much. The heel is really wide and so they will be best suited for rectangular/not-fan-shaped feet.

Sizing & Fit:

  • True to size, but you may want to size down in the Pheonix Knit if you have narrow heels (in case of stretching).
  • Average width.
  • Medium to high volume fit.
  • Removable insoles.

Be Lenka Barefoot

Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 5% off your Be Lenka EU purchase. We also carry select Be Lenka flats at Anya’s Shop in the US for easier shipping.

Be Lenka is currently revamping their ballet flat and Mary Jane line with a few lovely additions. At the moment they are only available in the EU, but will be making their way to the US at some point. Be Lenka flats are well made and durable, with a slightly thicker sole and more structure than some other barefoot flats. They also have a removable insole in most models. This makes them great for teachers and others who need to dress up and be on their feet all day.

Because the leather is a bit thicker on these, I found that they felt tight when brand new and needed some breaking in. They also don’t fit as securely on my narrow heels as Jenon and Origo, but overall they are very polished looking and lovely.

Sizing & Fit:

  • True to size.
  • Average width – not extra wide friendly.
  • Should fit most foot volumes except very high, because of the removable insole.

Softstar Shoes – Extra Wide Friendly

Softstar makes a classic Ballerine flat, a Merry Jane, and a Vintage Tie flat that I co-designed with them. Some can be customized in a bunch of colors, which is super fun, and all are available in multiple widths. The insoles on these are more cushioned than the other options here, making them good for people who are on their feet all day. The Ballerine also now comes in an extra wide Primal version!

The heel in the Ballerine does slip on me once broken in, so I prefer the ankle strap version (shown on me below) or the vintage tie flat because they fit more securely.

The Mary Jane style (Primal Merry Jane) has an extra wide, square shape, so if you need an uncompromising toe box that is where to look. But keep in mind that the fit is shallow over the toes, so I recommend stuffing it with paper towels overnight to give it some vertical space or requesting at checkout that they stretch the toe box height for you.

Sizing & Fit:

  • True to size
  • Lots of width options! Regular Ballerine for average width feet, Wide Ballerine for wide feet, and the Primal Merry Jane and Primal Ballerine for extra wide feet.
  • Fits most foot volumes, but can be loose on low volume/narrow heels.

Paidal Barefoot

A photo of two people's feet in Paidal Woven leather mary janes with a wide toe box, shown in red leather and a dark brown chocolate leather. They're both standing on a stone walkway.

You know I’m a sucker for a good weave. Earlier this year I purchased a pair of these gorgeous woven flats from Paidal Barefoot – a newish brand out of the UK, and I was able to spend some time with the founder at the Barefoot Shoe Expo. Each pair of Paidal shoes is handmade using a sacchetto construction. The shoe is essentially a leather sock that will mold and conform to your foot. It’s a real weave on the upper with a leather lining (no edges touching your feet) and a very elegant cut. They are quite pricey, but one of the most beautiful barefoot flats available.

These have a slimmer fit, but word on the street is that Paidal will have new models that will come in Wide shortly! Paidal also carries a pretty cross strap Mary Jane that looks lovely, though I haven’t tried it yet.

Sizing & Fit:

  • True to size
  • Slim to medium fit
  • Medium volume – I added a slim insole because I had gaping on the sides on my low volume feet.

Groundies – Extra Wide Option

Currently only available in the EU. The Groundies US store should be opening back up on Sept. 1 2026, but I don’t know which models will be available.

For me Groundies has been a reliable source of cute, quality, well-fitting barefoot ballet flats. They are always super light and stylish and give that touch of breezy, European street style to my outfits.

The Lily is the only current model I have experience with. It comes in two widths – I wear the regular width, and the Barefoot+ (wide) version is extra wide friendly.

Top down view of two pairs of feet in floral skirts both wearing Groundies Lily barefoot ballet flats, in regular and wide width
The Lily in Barefoot+ (wide) next to Barefoot (regular).

I’ve found with the elasticized opening on the Lily that they fit slightly smaller than expected, and some people with higher volume feet have reported it cuts into the backs of their heels. So you may want to size up a half size, and have some moleskin on hand for the break in process.

Sizing & Fit:

  • Lily fits true to size or slightly small – I am in between a 6 & 7 in flats and I went with the 7 (EU 37).
  • Average to slightly wide in Barefoot width, extra wide in Barefoot + (the Lily model).
  • Fits medium to lower volume feet best – might cut into your heels if you have thicker, high volume feet.
  • Removable insole gives you more versatility.

Magical Shoes – Extra Wide Friendly

Use code ANYA for 10% off

Magical Shoes has a few different cute flats that are great for high volume feet and those with tall toes that don’t like any pressure from the tops of their shoes. Specifically the Mona and the Anna flats are extra wide and high volume friendly. Their newer Ada flats (above right) are not as wide or high volume, and better suited for average width feet (though they do gape on the sides for me).

For me the standout is the Mona, because it’s not easy to find extra wide friendly flats that are that cute. And they are soft too!

Sizing & Fit:

  • Mona and Anna fit a little bit big to us, but Samantha still got her usual size. By contrast, Ada runs slightly small, so I got a 37 in those too (I am in-between a 36 & 37 usually in flats).
  • Average to slightly wide in Ada, extra wide in Mona and Anna.
  • Fits medium to higher volume feet best

Lang.S – Extra Wide Friendly

Top down view of a pair of leopard mary jane ballerinas from Lang S, with a black strap. The wide toe box flats are being worn with a pair of ruffle crew socks.

Use code ANYALANG for 15% off

Lang.S just added Mary Janes to their line-up, which has been getting better and better BTW. We already know and love their new Mira t-bars (restocking shortly!) and Fisherman sandals, and in general I am loving this more fashion forward approach to their shoe design.

The Ballet Flat from Lang.S has a higher vamp and a delicate strap. They are classic and cute, and also roomy in the toes. But they are also roomy everywhere else, which may be a problem if you have narrow heels and/or low volume feet. The toe box should be suitable for many extra wide feet, but probably better suited for those who also have high volume feet that don’t narrow at the heels.

Whitin Shoes

A flatlay of Whitin wide toe box barefoot ballet flats in different colors in a row. All have a knit upper,

While they are not super dressy, nor the cutest option here, the price point of $40 can’t be beat. Whitin has both a slip on ballet flat and a Mary Jane option – both are made of a knit material and come with a removable insole. They have a good wide fit, and a good amount of cushion, so a lot of newcomers to the barefoot space like them as an easy entry point.

I find them true to size, but the ballet flats don’t stay on my heel well because the shoe is wide throughout and the knit is stretchy. So for my foot type, the Whitin Mary Janes are best.

  1. Great, thank you! Last question: as I live in a colder climate and I lean towards minimalism,I would invest in a ballet flat (or Mary Jane) that could give that dressy feeling but that could also be wore with tights during autumn and spring and without in summer. Which model or brand you would suggest, as you also have chilly mid-seasons (I guess)? 🙂
    Thank you very much!

    Miriam

    1. Really any of them! Tights are so thin that they shouldn’t affect the fit (You might consider 5 toe tights so your toes don’t get squished!), unless you want thicker tights in which case a flat with a strap would be helpful so that they still fit well without tights. I do have cold mid seasons, but I usually switch to dress boots and tights instead of flats when I need to dress up and it’s chilly.
Here are some 5 toe tights I’ve found (but haven’t tried): https://toetoesocks.com/plain-nylon-toe-tights-black.html

  2. Hi, I love the Softstar flats and have purchased them before. Are yours in Shiny Pewter? I’m trying to get out of my all black comfort zone, haha. Your reviews are great!

  3. Wow! This is an amazing resource! Thank you. Do you have any recommendations for a brand that has more cushion? So many Barefoot shoes are so HARD, a little squish would be nice on my transitioning journey. Even as stack height increases, it’s often just more of the same hard material. I have put Northsole insoles into some of the boots and shoes from Lems and Vivo, and Bedrock sandals got more cushiony after a break in period. But I haven’t had much luck with dressier sandals and flats. Any suggestions?

    1. You should check out Oesh Shoes! They have a ballet flat with a thicker cushioned sole, but they still have toe space, are zero drop, and no arch support.

  4. Your wooden decking looks so slippery when wet, be careful in those shoes. I’ve gone over in flats a few times even with really rubbery sticky soles it can get surprisingly slick under your feet real fast.

  5. Can you recommend a flat that’s transition? Just started barefoot journey with Altra Paradigm and need that cushion.
    Thank you!

  6. Hi Anya. Your website is so amazingly helpful! Thank you! I have similar feet to yours and am looking for a wide toe box but I have very narrow ankles and backs of my feet so am prone to shoes slipping. Also, I may need to slip in an orthotic if need be due to my hypermobility initially so would be better with completely closed sides. Are there any that you found to stay up better on thinner ankles and heels? Thanks so much 😊

    1. Really the only true fix for that is a style with an ankle strap. Otherwise I pretty much always need a heel grip once the shoe is broken in. The Softstar Ballerine might be the best traditional ballet flat I’ve tried for narrow heels, but I use a heel grip in the back of those as well.

  7. Do you happen to know whether the Cassies tend to stretch out a little bit as they break in?

I got an 8 and an 8 1/2 in the mail today but I’m having a really hard time deciding which pair to keep (I ordered them both at the same time a week ago because I needed black zero drop dress shoes that wouldn’t break the bank for a concert this Sunday) – the 8s with the insole taken out (with it in was way too tight, tight like the women’s Xcursions) are about the right toebox width and height for the socks I’ll be wearing and the perfect length for me, but the 8 1/2s fit width-wise just fine with the insole in but they’re a bit too long (I’m finding my feet sliding forward in the shoe, causing my heel to lift up, even with the strap uncomfortably tight – any tighter and I’ll be cutting off circulation to my feet). Unfortunately, if it’s really close, I can’t truly know whether shoes/boots are the right size for me without wearing them all day for a couple days, which means wearing them outside, but wearing outside voids the return policy for almost all sellers that carry Xeros (the only one I know of that it doesn’t void it for is REI – that’s how I figured out what size Prios to keep, but they don’t carry the Cassies, otherwise that’s what I would have done; it may or may not void it for Amazon, though, which is where I got them – tried to figure it out, but it wasn’t clear). So I’m trying to decide whether the 8s will stretch out just enough for the width to work (preferably with the insole in, but without if necessary) or not. I feel like on the one hand, the length difference should be enough to decide (that’s what decided me on the Prios), but on the other hand, I feel like it’s more complicated than that.

    1. Hi Rachel, unfortunately I’ve never owned my own pair of Cassies. But after seeing and handling them, and knowing what they are made of, my guess if they will stretch a little but not a lot. Based off your description, the 8s seem right… you don’t want your foot sliding and have an uncomfortably tight strap…

      1. Thanks – that helps a bunch. That was my guess, just wanted to make sure, since this is my first pair of barefoot dress shoes (have sneakers, sandals, and hiking boots). I figure I’ll return the 8 1/2s, then I can take insoles of the 8s in and out as needed depending on what socks I’m wearing. I’m kind of glad I decided to just go with the Cassies rather than the Phoenix knit (I have a feeling it would be really hard to get the Phoenix’s to stay on without being too tight in the toebox, even though the Phoenix’s are technically dressier); and it makes sense – my Prios are also size 8. And the Cassies are still dressy enough to wear to my best friend’s wedding in February (can’t exactly wear sneakers or hiking boots under my dress as maid of honor, at least not for the wedding itself – dancing at the reception is a different story) but hopefully also still padded just enough to be able to dance in as well (I’m thinking about getting the thinner NorthSoles for either these or my sneakers, since I have a bit less tolerance for the pounding due to EDS – not sure how that would affect the fit at all, though).

  8. Hi, Anya –
I appreciate all that you do! These reviews are so helpful.
I am looking for vegan ballet flats that run wide. I have Xeros in black in US 8.5, which I like, but I need a lighter neutral color, too. It looks like Teedevo and Ahinsa are my best bets, but the size is throwing me. It looks like 40 in the Teedevo and 41 in Ahinsa, but that seems off. For reference, my absolute favorite shoes are Feelgrounds in size 39. They fit like a glove, and I have four pairs. Do you have any idea what is equivalent? Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi! Those brands do sound like your best bet for finding a lighter colored vegan flat. Ahinsa tends to run smaller than other brands, and I found the Tadeevo to run a little bigger. So it’s entirely possible you’d need different sizes in both.

  9. As a budget friendly alternative for a special occasion I can recommend the foldable minimalist ballet flats that can be found on Shein for only $15. The toebox isn’t wide enough to be considered barefoot, but the sole is thin, flexible, a little bit cushioned and 0 drop. They are cute and come in many colours. Linking seems difficult but you can search for “Minimalist Slip-On Suedette Ballet Flats” and look for the foldable ones. They are available in shiny PU-leather as well, but the suede ones are softer and a little bit stretchy.

  10. Thank you Anya for all the work you do to help us purchase healthy footwear. We’d be lost without you. I don’t want to be a ‘negative Nellie’, however, with all of these brands making ballet shoe styles I still cannot find one in a lighter neutral beige color. If I go to Pinterest and see all the people wearing ‘conventional’ ballet shoes for Spring, a vast majority are wearing them in a neutral , light beige/ ‘nude’ color. I have searched and searched and waited and waited (4 years and counting) for a light beige color in a classic style. The Angles are too ‘white’/ yellowish ( not beige) and maybe too stiff leather? ,the Shapen and many others are too ‘pink’, many are too dark/ camel brown color, Be Lenkas are too ‘old lady’ looking with two toned beige/pink and white sole. The closest I have seen are the SoftStar in latte color , however, they are much too sloped for my wide, plateau feet. Luks beige are close but I was wanting a more classic style not their side ‘cut out’ style and I have heard they are not wide in the toe box like their moccasins are. I find it so frustrating and disappointing that there are so many options and yet no one is providing the most classic, neutral , basic, ‘mainstream’ option STILL!
