Loafers have long been one of my favorite styles of shoes. They’re fashionable, practical, and can be worn as a dress or casual shoe. But typically they are really pinchy in the toes.
For years loafers and I never got along because of my foot issues. Until I discovered barefoot shoes that is. Now I don’t need those pointy loafers anymore! I’m in a long term relationship with wide toe box shoes and hurty shoes and I are never ever ever getting back together. 😉
If you’re interested in getting the loafer style without the bunions, check out this list of completely flat and wide foot-shaped barefoot loafers.
Why Most Loafers are Hurting Your Feet

I have some strong opinions on wearing shoes that hurt my feet (read this post for more on that). But the two biggest beefs I have with the loafers you’re most likely to see are they have a pointy toe box and a heel.
- Pointy Toe Box: Most shoes no longer look like feet at all. The pointed tips on your shoes prevent your toes from spreading out which can lead to foot pain AND prevent your body from moving well (did you know we use our big toe to balance?)
- Heel: No, they’re not stilettos, but even that small heel on traditional loafers can throw your center of gravity forward and force your body to compensate in awkward ways. Especially if you are susceptible to back pain, you might want to consider the heels on your shoes.

And the wild thing is, you find these painful features even on brands considered to be”comfort” brands. So I now look for foot-shaped shoes, that actually mirror my anatomy.

My Favorite Barefoot Loafers
Be Lenka

Leather | Sizes EU 36-43 | Ships from EU or US
When shopping with Be Lenka directly in the EU, you can use code ANYASREVIEWS for 5% off.
Be Lenka reliably has stylish and comfortable barefoot loafers. They are medium wide, and have a removable insole (keep the insole in for a bit more cush). The Divella (above left) is a dressy loafer with horsebit, while the Fiorela (above left) leans more casual. They both look nice with just about anything and give your toes room without looking out of place. So if you want to start taking better care of your feet without being obvious about it, this is a great place to start.

By Anya Loafers

Leather | Sizes EU 34-45 | Ships from US
I wanted a simple loafer that was sophisticated and elegant, without unnecessary doodads and that came in a variety of neutrals. So I just developed my own! 😀 The Dalia is fully leather (upper, lining, insole, outsole) with a thin layer of rubber on the bottom.
The leather is high end and feels so good on my feet. They do take a little bit of break in time to form to your foot, but they breathe well, are reparable, and really just get better with age. Both are best suited for average to wide feet, not ideal for narrow or extra wide. If you have low volume feet you might consider adding a tongue pad.

Shapen Loafers – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather | Sizes EU 35-44 | Ships from EU
You can use code ANYAS10 for 10% off full-priced items, or code ANYA5 for an extra 5% off sale items. Note that Shapen doesn’t accept returns outside the EU.
Shapen has a few nice loafer styles – one is the Sheen (above right) that has an extra wide fit and a shiny patent leather. They feel stiffer because of the patent leather and some don’t like that, but the toe space is lovely. They fit me best with an extra insole.
Another standout is Versa, which comes in two widths. Regular is average width, Wide is extra wide fitting. In the above left photo I am wearing Regular and Samantha is in Wide. The fun thing about these is that the metal bit is interchangeable, so you can order whatever style you like best!
The leather on the Versa is softer than the Sheen, but I find that the ankle opening is on the wide side and my feet want to slip out.

Peerko Trim

Leather | Sizes EU 36-43 | Ships from EU
When shopping in the EU, you can use code ANYASREVIEWS10 for 10% off – just note that they don’t accept returns outside the EU. Which is why we also carry them in the US!
The Peerko Trim is a loafer for people who want toe space AND pizazz. They are light, flexible, and low profile but with some sparkle and fun patterns. I think they can be used as a professional shoe, depending on your outfit. But they also work well as a casual everyday shoe.
Another style from Peerko is the Flare loafer. These are patent leather and rather high volume, so they don’t fit my foot type well.
Both have an average width fit (not suitable for extra wide feet) The Trim has a medium to lower volume fit and work much better for me than the higher volume Flare.
Paidal – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather | Sizes UK 3-9 | 2 Widths | Ships from UK
Paidal is a special brand that makes very classy high end barefoot dress shoes. Their two loafer styles come in both a regular and a wide version. They are very thin and minimal, with a glove-like barefoot feel. I think both are lovely.
Regular width works for my foot shape, but they do take a bit of breaking in to conform. The Wide version is extra wide fitting. They also provide a detailed size chart that can help you determine if they’ll be a good fit. I recommend making use of them and emailing in for advice before ordering, because they don’t accept returns for fit issues.
Dolfie Paradise Duke TS

Leather | Sizes EU 36-47 | Ships from EU
Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 10% off
The Dolfie Paradise Duke is actually a unisex model and it comes on a fairly thick sole. The first version of this was a miss for me – the heel was too wide and the sole too stiff. But they’ve just released an updated version (Duke TS) that should resolve some of my original concerns. I have not yet tried them, so don’t have more detailed information to offer. But I’ve had a good experience overall with Dolfie and love the style of their shoes.
Fit has been true to size for me with a shape that leans wide and roomy. Style is on point.
Fleeters Plum – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather | Sizes EU 36-43 | Ships from EU or US
Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 10% off.
These Fleeters Plum loafers are so 90s-esque, with a chunky outsole and fringe. The leather upper is really soft and they have a moderately cushioned insole so have a bit more to them than most barefoot shoes. I’ve been on the fence about the chunkiness of this style, but despite that have reached them fairly often. They are comfortable and easy to wear.
The fit is true to size and they are pretty wide fitting. I would call them extra wide friendly.
Ohne Project Luma

Vegan | Sizes EU 36-37 | Ships from EU
Use code ANYAOP10 for 10% off.
The Ohne Project loafer is a statement. They have a moccasin style top stitch, which makes for a nice amount of room above the toes. They come with multiple insole options depending on how high volume your feet are or how much cushion you want. My one complaint is that the fringe is curling up more than I’d like.
The fit is true to size and wide to slightly extra wide friendly.
Dream Pairs – Cushioned Option

Textile | Sizes US Womens 6-11 | Ships from Amazon
This is a wide but not barefoot option that is also budget friendly! They are a knit loafer that is soft and easy to wear, and come with a cushy removable insole that is lightly supportive. They have a medium width fit and are overall pretty comfy and cute for the price. This is a good choice for people who don’t want full barefoot but want to start wearing comfier shoes.
Magical Shoes Pienza – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather | Sizes EU 37-47 | Ships from EU or US
Get 10% off with code ANYA
Magical Shoes Pienza is super lightweight and flexible, like everything from Magical Shoes! This unisex style comes in mutliple shades of soft leather or suede and can easily take you from casual to dressy. The fringe is removable in case that’s not your vibe.
The fit is quite wide throughout and they gape on the sides for me. The size chart indicates that they run short in length, but I still did not size up because I needed a more secure fit. They are best suited for overall wide & high volume feet. But the style is super cute!

Groundies Brisbane

Leather | Sizes EU 36-43 | EU only
I love the Groundies Brisbane, but unfortunately it’s not available in the Groundies US store at this time. So this one’s for those of you in other parts of the world! Brisbane is a very classic loafer style, in fact it’s actually one of my favorites on the market right now. The leather is high quality and holds its shape well without feeling stiff.
This model does run long and I sized down one. They are medium width.
Runner Ups
Zeazoo Cheetah

Leather | Sizes EU 35-42 | Ships from EU
Use code ANYASREVIEWS to get 5% off.
The Zeazoo Cheetah is a classic loafer style made of a soft, leather upper. The outsole feels a bit casual to me, but they are elegant and comfortable.
Zaqq Qerp

Leather | Sizes UK 4.5-12.5/EU 37-48 | Ships from Germany
Zaqq Qerp loafers are so soft and feel great on my feet. They run true to size and have a medium width toe box – so not suitable for extra wide feet. But I like the classic styling of them with the metallic braided details.
FeetSutra Chandigarh

Leather | Sizes US Women’s 5-11/Men’s 7-14 | Ships from US
Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 10% off
This loafer from FeetSutra model has a nice classic silhouette with visible stitching details. I found they run quite short and are wide and high volume through the midfoot and heel. I need a more tailored fit through that area to keep the shoes on my feet, so they ended up not being a good fit for me.
Ruby Workshop

Leather | Sizes EU 36-43 | Handmade in Turkey
Use code ANYASREVIEWS35 for 15% off
Ruby Workshop is an Etsy shop that makes loafers and flats in lots of colors. They are simple leather shoes in what I would call middle quality leather, but feel light and soft. They are a little high volume for me and fit a wide toe box. You can see in the pictures above that they are also wide through the heel, so will overall be best for thick, high volume feet.
They are more affordable than a lot of other barefoot shoes, which is a plus, and can be dressed up or down.
Sullivent – Wide But Not Barefoot

Leather | 2-4mm drop | Sizes EU 36-42 | Ships from US
Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 10% off
These are beautiful loafers with a roomy square shaped toe box. They are not zero drop and have a visible heel. I do not have my own pair, but tried them on at the Barefoot Shoe Expo this year. They felt a bit stiff for my taste, but are beautifully made.
Men’s Wide Toe Box Loafers
Oaka Studio – Coming Soon!

Leather | Sizes US Men’s 8-13 | Ships from US
Use code OAKAANYA for 15% off. These will be available November 2, 2026.
We really like the style of these Oaka loafers and the leather is very nice. But Justin found that the vamp is too low volume for him and presses into his feet. He’s going to see if they break in more, but wishes that they had a little more volume. The sizing was true for him, if not slightly big.
Sullivent – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather | Sizes EU 39-48 | Ships from US
Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 10% off
Sullivent makes the nicest high end wide toe box dress shoes around. Their dress loafers are luxurious, Spanish-made, and will last you for years. They feature some excellent toe space, but do have a small 4mm drop. If you are looking for true formal wear, that might be something you are looking for.
All these shoes are made-to-order, so keep that in mind before ordering, but they’re worth the wait!

Birchbury Emhurst

Leather | Sizes US Men’s 7-16 | Ships from US
These Birchbury loafers have a nice fit with a decently cushioned outsole (great for those who don’t want a full barefoot feel), but they ran small for Justin and he needed to size up. The style is just ok – nothing that stands out but also not bad.

Hi Anya,
What size in the Be Lenka Viva loafers do you wear? As my feet are the same dimensions as yours and also low volume.
Thanks in advance!
Hi Teri, Anya wears an EU 37 in those.
Crying in vegan
Same. *sigh*
Agree. So frustrating finding nice vegan dressier shoes that are in a current style. Maybe someone can review these when they start shipping in September: https://www.beflamboyant.com/collections/womens-barefoot-loafers/products/black-barefoot-loafer-glow
I love the look of the By Anya loafers! I have high volume feet – Vivo and Splay are too tight over the top of my feet… Will the loafers fit me? Thanks!
I think they should! They have a higher volume fit than most Vivos for sure.
Hi. Do any of these comfy wide toe box shoes have a little bit of a platform sole? I don’t want super flat. But I need to wear all day. And be on my feet. Thanks.
These pretty much all have a flat sole, but you can add your own insoles to many of them!
I love the Gaucho Ninja ones in the photo, but I could not find loafers like that on their website or instagram. Do you know if they are still being sold somewhere?
It looks like they have since discontinued that model.
This question is for Samantha. I’m looking for loafers but I have pretty hard to fit feet. I have high volume, extra wide feet. So far, the Shapen Cozy (wide) boots fit best (with room to spare) the bohempia velik also fit, but not ideally (a bit tight across the top of the foot and not enough width in the pinky toe area where I need it most). Do you think the belenka buena would fit my volume? How about the shapen sheen? Or the Lisbeth joe in the width? Or the ruby workshop? Thanks for any insights you can give!
Hey Nicole! So far, the Be Lenka Buena is my favorite loafer. The fit my volume exactly, but if you have *very* high volume feet you might need to remove the insole. I did not have luck with the Shapen Sheen. I think it comes up too far on the foot for me to be able to get my foot in, but I love MANY of their other shoes! You will likely find Lisbeth Joe too narrow along with Ruby workshop.
I’d love to see a list of vegan options. There’s so much leather and that’s just not an option for me, but I do need wide width or wide toe box shoes. I’m especially looking for dressier shoes like loafers.
In the past few months (since I last updated this article) there actually have been a few new vegan models launched! The Feelgrounds Loafer is a good one, and then a couple others that I haven’t yet tried are the Ohne Luma, and Be Flamboyant.
Hi, I’m trying to decide between the Peerko Trim and the loafers from Ruby Workshop, and I was hoping you could help me. Overall, I’m looking for a supple slip-on shoe that will flex easily with my foot and has a lot of vertical toe space. I plan to wear toe spacers and use a 3mm insole, so I need to be able to flex my toes without resistance.
The catch is that my feet are actually mid to low volume, so I often slip around in these types of shoes. The only barefoot slip-ons that have given me that perfect balance of roomy toe space height and overall flexibility without falling off my foot are the Xero Pagosas and the Freet Talus shoes. I once tried the Vivobarefoot Opankas and found them to be far too rigid and constricting, especially in the toe area.
Which of the shoes (if any) do you think would fit my needs best? If neither, do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.
Hi Nura, the Peerko Trim is softer than Ruby and also higher volume so you should have no trouble adding an additional insole.
Hi Anya – have you tried the Earthing Harmony loafers and Chelsea boots? They look cute, but not sure about the fit. Thanks!
Hi Helen, we haven’t tried those personally. There have been reports in our community group about difficulties with shipping/returns so I would caution you in that regard.
I don’t understand the point of leather shoes if they’re stiff and can’t go through wet weather without some additional processing that the shoe makers don’t do themselves. This all seems highly impractical.
Hey,
How about the stack height and quality of Oaka loafers (stitching, sole glueing)? Will they last some years or will fall apart? Can you ask your husband about comparison Oaka and Birchbury?
To be honest with you, Oaka is newer in our household and hasn’t been subjected to nearly as much wear as Birchbury (which has worn very well for Justin and Samantha’s husband Robby). Based on the way they feel after initial testing I would say that I believe Birchbury is a cut above in terms of quality, but I don’t have any immediate concerns with Oaka wearing out fast.
