Barefoot rain boots keep our feet happy on wet days!

If you live in a wet climate waterproof barefoot shoes will keep your socks dry and your feet happy. You see, many standard rain boots have a narrow pointy toe and chunky heel that can hurt and cause all kinds of issues in your body. But a completely flat and wide rain boot is hard to find!

I’ve compiled a list of all the waterproof, water resistant, and rubber rain boots (for kids and adults) that also don’t squish your toes. Don’t let the weather keep you from getting outside! Read on for the full list of barefoot waterproof shoes below.

How to Waterproof Your Shoes

Before we get to the waterproof barefoot shoe options, let’s discuss ways you can make use of the shoes you have. Keep in mind that treating your shoes with a waterproofing agent can change the way they look. Leather often gets significantly darker with impregnating waxes and can even change in texture. While these products are usually very effective, a shoe spray is a better alternative if you don’t want to change the way your shoes look.

Waterproofing Sprays, Waxes, & Creams

If working with suede, nubuck, or fabric I use waterproofing sprays because it’s less likely to change the look and texture of the material. Waxes & creams have to be rubbed into the shoe and are more likely to affect the look, but they are often more effective – best used on smooth leather/vegan leather products.

  • Carbon Pro – The most effective without changing the material in any way! Works on everything, including vegan and fabrics
  • Nano Tech Waterproof Leather Spray – Have not used myself, but it comes highly rated
  • Nikwax Footwear Care – This is an ecofriendly spray, but it does slightly alter the look of suede/nubuck
  • Renapur Leather Balsam – This conditioner is a gentle waterproofer, not as effective as the other options. But really great for restoring the look of your shoes and increasing their longevity!
  • Otter Wax – Works great
  • Sno Seal – Very effective, but can really change the look of the leather (unless you are dealing with a glossy black to begin with).

Other Tricks/Gadgets

  • Aquaseal – This is used to repair holes or seal up seams on your shoes!
  • Neos Overshoe – This overshoe can be worn directly over your shoes to make them waterproof and slip-resistant (there are many retailers, so search around to find your size).
  • Chala Overshoe – Available in 3 different varieties for year-round situations! Use code 93D5B5E9 for 5% off

Adult Waterproof Barefoot Shoes

When it comes to rain boots, most of the options available for adults have clunky soles and pointy toe boxes. The options listed here are the most comfortable I’ve found, with space for your toes and a natural fit and feel.

Rubber Rain Boots

The following are the truest to barefoot shoe ideals, and my personal top 3 picks.

  • Wildling Ranidae – This is the highest quality rain boot of the bunch. The toe box is also quite generous without being excessively floppy (so hard to do in rain boots!). They run a little long so size down if you’re between. You can get a one-time free shipping offer with code AWN_ANYA_S. If you’re outside the US/Canada, shop Wilding Shoes here.
  • Saguaro Brisk – Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 15% off. Comes in a fleece lined and unlined version. My favorite is the fleece lined. Great foot shape, flexible, comfy. They are a clear winner for me, albeit a thinner rubber that doesn’t feel as durable as Wildling’s boot.
  • Xero Shoes Gracie (women’s) – This is a cute chelsea style rubber rain boot, for little puddles. I loves them in bright yellow. Read my review here. For those in the EU, shop Xero Shoes EU here.
  • BONUS: Vaistoa Katve (EU only) – This Finnish brand only ships within Europe, but I have tested a sample and they are great! Good for those who need a taller cut, and they have an extra wide toe box shape.

And here are some additional options that don’t have quite as wide of a toe box as I prefer, but can work for slimmer feet.

  • Women’s Asgard (AMAZON) – Packable, affordable rubber boots that check all the boxes, but do have a narrower toe box than I prefer. Read my Asgard review here.
  • Bisgaard (women’s & kids) – These rubber boots are completely flat and flexible but only go up to a size 40. US/Canadian customers can get them from Pedterra and use code ANYASREVIEWS, and the rest of the world can search for a retailer on Bisgaard’s website. Wider than the Asgard above, but just a little bit narrow.
  • Pokeboo Packable Rain Boots – Men’s and Women’s – very minimal but have a narrower toe box. This is the only other true barefoot rain boot that comes in men’s sizes besides Saguaro Brisk.

Fun fact, you can turn any rain boots into thermal ones with a boot liner! And I also highly recommend the use of leg warmers to get a secure fit without compromising on toe space (because pull on rain boots are not adjustable).

Compromise Rain Boots:

These options are more minimalist than most conventional rain boots, but they might have a small heel rise and are heavier and thicker than is typical for a barefoot shoe (and also pinchier in the toe box).

Waterproof/Resistant Shoes

Lem’s Waterproof Boulder Boot

While these are not your typical pull on rubber rain boots, these barefoot shoes are water resistant and practical for wet weather.

Kids Waterproof Barefoot Shoes

Ten Little Rain Boots

Like for adults, true barefoot rain boots for kids are a tough find! But the options below we have vetted to be zero drop a wide toe box, so that kids can play in the rain and mud without hurting their feet.

Rubber Rain Boots

  • Wildling Ranidae – The same rain boot we love for adults, also comes in kids sizes! You can get a one-time free shipping offer with code AWN_ANYA_S. If you’re outside the US/Canada, shop Wilding Shoes here.
  • Bundgaard rubber boots (US/Canada) – All the Bundgaard Classic wellies have a good wide toe box and are zero drop, and we consider them to be the best true kids barefoot rain boot available! Customers outside the US can order directly from Bundgaard.
  • Koel – These wellies also have a great toe box shape and are a good choice. We carry these at Anya’s Shop in the US!
  • Saguaro BriskSizes EU 24-34. Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 15% off. We love these, especially the fleece lined version.
  • Foot BuddyToddler/little kid sizes US 8-13 Use code ANYAS15 for 15% off
  • Ten LittleToddler/little kid sizes US 6-13. These have a good shape to them, but are a little heavy. Read our review here for more details.
  • IgorToddler/little kid sizes US 4-13 Also available in the US at PedTerra in sizes EU 20-30
  • 1000 Hours OutsideToddler 6 up – Youth 2
  • Bisgaard – All zero drop except “Rain” model. Toe box a little narrower than the above two options but still pretty good.
  • Oaki Rain Boots – The rubber boots are zero drop, neoprene boots are not.
  • Original Hunter Classic
  • Stonz – West and Urban models. Use code ANYASREVIEWS10 for 10% off
  • Viking(EU) Not all models are zero-drop, so look for the flat soles (Indie line looks the best!). Viking ships to the EU only, but this brand can also be found at Outnorth for international shipping.

Waterproof/Resistant Shoes

If you don’t need a full rubber boot, these waterproof kids barefoot shoes are the next best thing.

  1. Hi! Thanks for the article, because it makes it clear for me that… among available barefooties I won’t find anything I’m actually looking for: breathable & waterproof barefoot shoes with the high-quality membrane (like Gore-Tex). I’ll explain my point.:)

Before I went barefoot I used to wear trekking shoes from Ecco, Timberland etc. as my everyday shoes. They had excellent membranes: kept water out even in the heavy rain and drained the sweat… feet remained dry at the end of the day! Leather would never work that way – despite the claims of “breathability” it doesn’t work, at least for my over-sweating feet. I have Vivobarefoot Tracker II Firm Ground and Magna Trail. Yes, they are water-proof/resistant, but hmmm, my foot is wet with sweat after a day hiking.
I also have a Wildling crane, which… became completely wet after 5 minutes of cycling in the rain. I would consider one of the Xero models, cuz they seem quite close to what I’m looking for, but they look so “technical” that puts me off.

So – why on earth wouldn’t any minimalist shoe company use the technologies already developed and introduce a real breathable barefoot shoe? Maybe if they are more people thinking likewise, we could create a petition? (my ultimate dream is: a shoe like Vivo Magna Trail with a breathable membrane) 🙂 Greetings from Greece.

    1. I think lots of people are thinking like you and wishing for truly waterproof shoes that breathe! My only recommendation right now is to check out the Sole Runner Transition Vario. As the market grows we’ll be getting more options, I am confident of that.

      1. Hi! Thank you for your amazing reviews. I currently wear my husbands goretex solamons to walk our dog on wet days. I have been transitioning to barefoot shoes slowly and would love to find a pair of waterproof barefoot shoes, that are below the ankle. Are there any on the market??
Unfortunately my archilles ache in any boots.

        1. Hi! Zaqq Barefoot has some low top waterproof shoes that could be good! The Xero Prio All Day sneaker is water resistant and that might be worth checking out as well.

    2. Hi!
Totally on board with you here. I don’t want warm lining (fleece, wool, etc), I have plenty of good woollen socks that get me through -10 °C days in shoes without any lining. What I do care about; waterproof and breathable, so I can wear them all year long.

Ahinsa Jaya may be good for this. They have a vegan leather that is waterproof and they claim to be breathable, but I haven’t tried them yet.

      1. Oh yeah, just to add 1 more request to the list: real flexible soles with profile. I mean: we wouldn’t be asking for waterproof boots if we wouldn’t have rain > rain gives mud > mud makes everything slippery > profile is needed, as flat soles don’t work anymore, regardless of the quality of the rubber.

… Just throwing some wishes out there in hope one of the brands reads along and decides to develop these shoes 😉

  2. Ahhh zapato Feroz have children’s barefoot shoes and waterproof as well, I haven’t seen any softer and flexible shoes.
they dont ship out of Europe unfortunately…

  3. amazing resource, great work. can u explain why you have the mudee listed as water repellent, the image of the shoe looks pretty waterproof to me. am i missing something

    1. As far as I understood it, that was how Freet labelled them. In the pair that I have tested I didn’t really put it to the test (ie stand in a tub of water), but they at least were water repellent.

  4. Hey Anya,
What are the light blue shoes in your top picture? The ones on the left?
Rainy season is almost upon us and I like the look of their toebox.
    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi! It’s the Vivobarefoot Fulham, which currently isn’t in stock (at least on my region’s Vivo site). A real shame since now is when people are needing it! But you might get lucky at Revivo.com.

  5. Hi, I can’t find information online about the insole width of the Konforme rain boots. I’m trying to find something that fits my almost 4 year old’s wide feet. Do you know anything about how wide they are, or do you know of any kids rain boots that are good for wide feet? Thank you! Your blog is amazing!

    1. Hi! I don’t have firsthand experience with this shop, but they are involved in the community so I am fairly certain that they are a legitimate retailer of barefoot shoes.

  6. Hi! Love your website 🙂
I’m looking for some rubber rain boots for my 1 year old. Love the bisgaard ones, but can’t find any info about them being a minimalist shoe. Do you have any experience with these boots? And are they zero drop?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi! Yes, I do know for certain that most of the Bisgaard rubber boot models are zero drop. They do have one or two that have a heel, but it’s very noticeable from the photos. They are also flexible, and decently wide, but not super wide.

  7. Hi,
Are see kai run boots barefoot or not? I can not find this info on the internet. Are the shoes I am looking for for my barefoot 5 yo boy.
    Thanks,Monika

    1. Last they told me was they are not zero drop. They used to say they were zero drop, and my son wore a pair of their boots for a winter, but then they took that off their site and replied to me that they weren’t. So, I’m not sure what is going on there. Thanks for reminding me to reach out to them and ask again (I’ve pestered them about this at least 5X before, ha!). But when you look at their shoes they really look to be totally flat! I also found this:
      https://see-kai-run.reamaze.com/kb/fit/what-is-the-barefoot-movement-and-what-is-your-take-on-it

      1. Thanks for a reply, Anya. What means “next best to barefoot”? And what about their sizes. I need shoes for 18 cm long and almost 7,7 cm wide. As I`d be ordering from Europe, I have no choice to return…
Do you know any other barefoot shoes/winter boots this way: water resistant, warm, high for snow and sports/hiking style, not casual shoes? I have been googling a lot and last year too but See kai run looks like unike of this style?

        1. Have you looked at the Vivobarefoot Yeti? Or Be Lenka Penguin? It sounds like what you need is this article on kids winter boots:
          https://anyasreviews.com/barefoot-minimalist-kids-boots/
As far as See Kai Run sizing, it’s been too many years since I ordered for me to remember. I followed their instructions and they were the right size. I think that “next best to barefoot” means that being barefoot is best, but their shoes are close to it.

    1. Hi! Those are the Vivobarefoot Fulham, in a grey color that was available a few years ago. I believe you can still find it in a few sizes on Revivo.com (the color is called Zinc).

  8. I’m looking for a barefoot wellie, but I have really really wide calves. Do you have any recommendations? It looks like the Asgard won’t be big enough? I really don’t like hot feet, so something cool enough for summer would be another big criteria for me.

    1. Hmm, my best suggestion would be to look for short rain boots such as these from Bundgaard. Currently there aren’t any good wide calf options. You could also try a waterproof overshoe if you need something that comes up higher.
