Barefoot and wide toe box boots are the only way to keep my feet happy in the fall/winter seasons. I just can’t handle scrunched toes and clunky rigid soles! If you also hate stuffing your feet into uncomfortable boots you are in the right place. Thank goodness there are practical and stylish wide toe box boots that let your feet move naturally, and still protect you from the elements.
In this article I share my favorite barefoot & wide toe box boots after years of testing on myself and many others. It has all the up to date information on what’s new and coming, and there are options with cushion if you only want the wide toe box! Let’s go.
Why I Wear Foot-Shaped Boots
I wear barefoot boots with a natural foot shape because:
- They are only type of boot I’ve found that is truly anatomical and not pointy and tapered like most boots. After years of chronic foot pain I just need that!
- They help me feel more stable in the elements because they are lower to the ground and flexible – I can control my body more easily than in thick, stiff boots.

Now let’s get to it. Here are my top tried-and-true favorite barefoot boots in order. Every brand listed offers women’s, unisex, and men’s styles for everyday use.
Peerko

What I Love About Them: Peerko boots were instant love as soon as I laid eyes on them. And now 6 years later, still my most worn! They’re the most stylish and versatile barefoot boots I have, not to mention they’re lightweight and have a wide forefoot. In my experience they have the most universal shape and fit that works for the most people straight out the gate.
They have different cuts of boots with different linings for different degrees of warmth, so you can get something right for your climate. The lace up boots are my go to, but I also love their tall boots for dressier outfits. They’re all so easy to wear with my outfits, dang comfy and look equally classy on both men and women. And they have some colorful, fun options too!
The outsole is meant for everyday use and is not a rugged winter outsole (if that’s what you’re looking for, head to my practical winter boots guide or read on). And they have vegan options!
Sizing & Fit Type:
- True to size – I am wearing my usual size 37 in most of my Peerko boots, but I size up in the wool lined Frost (which I always do in boots with warm linings!).
- Wide fit – wider than your average barefoot shoe brand, but not extra wide.
- Medium volume, but adjust well on my low volume feet and the lace ups can loosen for high volume.
El Naturalista – Extra Wide Friendly

What I Love About Them: Possibly the hottest new wide toe box boots of the season – El Naturalista’s Nomada boots became an instant favorite both for myself and for this community. They have a clever faux heel and higher stack height that’s still lightweight and flexible – it’s just the right amount of thickness for fall and winter use.
The Nomada boots have a perfect blend of rugged and practical with fashion forward. Very mainstream looking, easy to wear, and extremely comfortable. They are Samantha (AKA extra wide foot) approved. She’s wearing the black pair above!

- True to size
- Wide to extra wide toe box shape
- Medium to high volume, but I actually don’t have too much trouble wearing them on my low volume feet. They cup my heel well.
Lems Shoes – Extra Wide Friendly
Leather or Textile | Sizes US Womens 6.5 – Mens 15 | Available at:
What I Love About Them: Lems Shoes has some really great barefoot and not barefoot boots with more cushion than the other brands listed here. I especially love the Chelsea boot and the waterproof Boulder Boot Grip is excellent for rain and mud.
The thicker sole makes Lems a good brand for people who want more cushion or for days when your feet need a break. I also love that Lems have a lot of vertical space above the big toe. Plus, the look is classic and cool. Justin and I both love our Lems and wear them quite a lot during the cold months.
Note that not all Lems Shoes have the same shape. I recommend choosing their Wide or Widest models (they have a fit guide for each listing). If you’re look for Extra Wide – the Chelsea suede is the boot you want.
Sizing & Fit:
- Runs small in our experience – I usually go up a size in my Lems boots.
- Fits wide or extra wide feet if you choose Wide or Widest!
- Higher volume – I usually need to add extra insoles or socks, because I have low volume feet.

What I Love About Them: The Vivobarefoot Gobi boots were my very first barefoot winter boot back in 2017 and I used the heck out of them! They wore like a dream, and I love that Vivobarefoot boots look kinda urban and cool. They also have a dressier chelsea for a more classic look. This is a good brand for people with slimmer, low volume feet (the best for that foot type in this list).
Vivobarefoot boots all have grippy outsoles and high quality uppers, but tend to be on the stiffer side when brand new. I’ve found that they take a bit to break in but then are soft, flexible AND durable.
And I learned the hard way that Vivobarefoot boots aren’t very warm unless you swap out the insole for a better one (check out my insoles guide for how to fix this). But overall we’ve had great luck with the quality and longevity of our pairs.
Sizing & Fit Type:
- Runs slightly long, but I wear my usual size. Exception is the Waterproof boots which fit snugger.
- Average to slim width – the Hiber and Explorer Mid have the most forgiving fit and fit my wide feet well. The Gobi boot is on the narrow side for me.
- Medium to low volume

What I love About Them: Be Lenka has a versatile selection of barefoot boots, ranging from dressy and stylish to rugged and warm. All are quite practical with durable slip-resistant outsoles and they have a good fit with a wide toe box. They have a few new models coming out this fall including some nice tall boots with a functional outsole. I’ll keep ya notified when it launches in the Barefoot Shoe Digest.
Besides having options, Be Lenka boots stands out for their top notch quality. They’re my go to when I need something a little more weather friendly than Peerko, but that still has plenty of space for my toes. Just be aware that the tradeoff is they are a little heftier than you might be used to with barefoot shoes. We carry lots of Be Lenka boot models at Anya’s Shop in the US.
Sizing & Fit Type:
- Run slightly small – I size up to a 38 in all models.
- Wide to extra wide fit – The Winter has the squarest shape of all Be Lenka boots. The others
- Medium to high volume – I usually need an extra insole for my low volume feet.

What I Love About Them: Shapen Barefoot makes stylish everyday boots for men and women that have a generously wide toe box and roomy fit. They’re great for people who want the style but need wider than what’s typical for barefoot shoes. I absolutely love the Cozy boot, they are the one Shapen boot that really fits my foot type well. All the toe room, and a secure fit that moves with me. Most other models are too wide and high volume, and in general I recommend Shapen boots for that specific foot type.
Winter models such as the Frosty, Cozy, and Urbaneer are made on a grippier, more robust outsole than the other lifestyle boots.
Sizing & Fit:
- Fits roomy and slightly big. I wear a 37 and have lots of room.
- Wide to extra wide fit – these fit Samantha’s extra wide feet well!
- High volume – I add insoles to mine.
If you like the width of Be Lenka but want something softer and lighter, Shapen is the brand.

What I Love About Them: Possibly the most stylish boot in my closet – they are elegant and elevated while still working with most things in my wardrobe. I also specifically designed these (yes, this one is my own brand!) to look more like a conventional boot with a dressier outsole. They’re my go-to everyday boot with the most fashion forward design.
The Faye has a sleek, fitted look and side zipper for easy on and off, and the interior is lined with a premium chrome free leather.
Sizing & Fit:
- True to size
- Medium to wide fit
- Will fit a wide variety of foot shapes, but likely not suitable for extra wide feet
- Fitted through the ankle, medium volume over the arch.

What I Love About Them: Xero Shoes makes several practical barefoot boots for fall and winter with a classic aesthetic. New this fall is the Breckenridge which I am really enjoying in black. The fit is super comfortable and they style well. Justin loves the Denver boots. But they cater to an average to narrow toe box width and a wide midfoot, which means they aren’t a great brand for my foot type.
But they are a favorite for people who are new to barefoot shoes because they tend to have a lower price point than other brands and a wide range of options. They also have a huge fall/winter sale that’s worth checking out!
Sizing & Fit:
- We find Xero to run true to size mostly for Justin, but I size up more often than not in their boots.
- Medium width toe box, but wide throughout.
- Fairly high volume, but the Breckenridge cinches up nicely on lower volume feet.
Men’s models fit wider than women’s models.

What I Love About Them: Wilding Shoes is another brand that makes me giddy. All of their models are fabric with an extremely flexible sole and one of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn! You wouldn’t expect it because of how lightweight they are, but the Wildling winter models made of wool are pretty warm and with an extra wool insole feel great for most of the winter.
They’re also more durable and practical than you would think. The water resistance is enough for some rain and snow, and I find that I love wearing them on nature walks and light hikes so I can feel all the texture beneath me.
Sizing & Fit Type: I highly recommend you consult their size finder when ordering instead of ordering your usual size. They convert their sizing a little different than I expect, so I’ve accidentally ordered too big a size multiple times.
- True to size based on the EU sizing.
- Average to slightly wide width, but not extra wide.
- Medium to high volume fit.
If you have shallow feet I would recommend getting the wool insole for a better fit (works great for us!).
P.S. Some people are surprised by how long their Wildings are – this is intentional and as long as the shoe is secure and not flopping the extra length shouldn’t be an issue.

What I Love About Them: Mukishoes is another extremely flexible and lightweight barefoot shoe brand with genuine ground feel. While not quite as flexible or “second-skin” like as Wildling shoes, they are more mainstream looking so I end up reaching for my Mukishoes a ton throughout the season. They feel so great and also look fashionable!

Sizing & Fit Type:
- True to size mostly, but slightly small in the Chelsea boots.
- Slim to average width toe box, but the flexible outsole and soft upper accommodates some wider feet.
- Medium to high volume. I usually wear an insole in all of my pairs because I have low arches and skinny ankles.

What I Love About Them: These boots are fully leather, breathable, and flexible. They have a really nice fit with a generous toe box that is roomy in all directions (above the toes too!). The Kombat boot has a thicker outsole that looks cool and helps keep you farther from the cold ground. But it’s still super flexy. I really enjoyed them last season, because of how comfortable and stylish they are. Just keep in mind that these boots run roomy across the board so are well suited for extra wide, high volume feet.

- Runs on the big side. I still wear 37, but have extra room.
- Extra wide toe box.
- High volume – I need an extra insole in mine for a secure fit.
Runner Ups
The above are my top ten most worn barefoot boot brands for everyday style, but there are some other really great barefoot shoes that deserve a mention. And depending on your foot type and preferences, they might be perfect for you!
Origo Adventurer – Extra Wide Friendly
The Origo Adventurer is an ultra light and comfy boot with ample toe space and a heritage feel. They are super comfortable, I am a big fan! The leather has a really nice natural quality to it that will get better with him. And of the options here, they are one of the lightest and most flexible.
I think the fit on the Origo Adventurer is really great. You get plenty of toe space, but the shoe is not floppy or slippy. It’s a good balance of roomy and fitted!

Rosa & Lila by Anya (me!)

I designed two wide toe box versions of a classic western ankle bootie that we carry at Anya’s shop called the Rosa (with side zipper) and Lila (pull-on chelsea). I wear them all the time because they style really well and look mainstream compared to a lot of barefoot shoes. I really wanted something more classic that didn’t squish my toes, so I just went ahead and made my own! The leather upper is really high quality and gets better with age, and the natural leather lining feels soft and breathable on the feet.
They do have a thicker, stiffer sole than a lot of the softer barefoot shoe brands, especially when brand new. The quality leather insole breaks in after a while, but they’ll never be as soft as some. For me this is an ok compromise when I want to dress up!
Sizing & Fit Type: They have a more average width with a higher volume upper. I use tongue pads in mine to get more security. Sizing is true.
Gaucho Ninja – Extra Wide Friendly
Gaucho Ninja barefoot boots are goodyear welted for durability and longevity. They are designed in the UK by Gaucho Ninja and completely handmade with vegetable tanned leather in Spain by a family-run artisan factory. There’s so much to love about these boots! The leather is beautiful and high quality giving these boots a substantial feel to them. The tongue is gusseted, but unlined so it doesn’t feel bulky. They’re so special, we now carry the Chelsea at Anya’s Shop!

Skinners
There is no shortage of lace-up boots on the market, but Skinners has some solid options for both men and women! They’ve really managed to create a boot that feels refined and classy-looking. They are soft, structured where they need to be, and don’t have that oversized, floppy fit that comes with many barefoot boots. The thinner laces on some models are also a subtle but thoughtful touch. It gives a more feminine look, and I’m here for it!
The outsole is functional without being aggressive, and the lining options add warmth without compromising flexibility. They feel built for real-world wear.

Realfoot – Extra Wide Friendly
Realfoot Farmer Boots are aggressively wide, the widest of the wide. They are also quite soft and comfortable, and an all around good boot for people who want uncompromising toe room. They have been true to size for us.

What I Love About Them: Groundies does stylish barefoot boots for men and women very well. They also tend to be very flexible and light, and overall pleasant to wear.
Be aware that Groundies has different toe box shapes – Barefoot Light, Barefoot, and Barefoot+ (extra wide). The “Light” is tapered and a more traditional shape, so I recommend filtering by Barefoot or Barefoot+ so all you see are the foot shaped options. Currently it looks like Barefoot+ might be getting phased out, but they have yet to release all their 2026 styles so we’ll see.

- True to size
- Average width in Barefoot and extra wide and overall big in Barefoot+.
- Medium to lower volume generally, but Barefoot+ works for high volume.

Feelgrounds
Feelgrounds is an all vegan brand with a couple boot options. The Patrol is lined with fleece, and they come with both a fleece and a cork insole. They also come with a grippy outsole for all-weather conditions, and are gusseted up to the ankle for waterproof-ness. They’re entirely vegan and have a pretty thick sole that some people find stiff. But for wintery weather they are practical. You can also find a chelsea boot in several colors from Feelgrounds.

Koel
Koel boots fit an average foot best and are medium to low volume. I don’t need any fit hacks to get a good fit, but they are only just wide enough (and actually I wish they were a smidge wider).

Magical Shoes
Magical Shoes is a Polish brand that makes super flexible barefoot shoes. Their boots are super comfortable and lined with warm wool or fleece. They also have a lot of vertical toe space, so they tend to be a home run when it comes to the comfort for a lot of people. I find their sneakers and boots run quite small, so I recommend sizing up one in them.

Zaqq Barefoot
Zaqq barefoot boots look amazing, they honestly have the widest selection of barefoot boots I’ve ever seen. They tend to be higher volume, and average width. Probably best suited for EU customers, because it’s quite expensive to ship overseas.
My personal favorites are the Riquet and Equity – both very sleek. They’re a wonderful blend of mainstream style with really soft, flexible soles.

Hy Anya, you did a great job here, I have a big problem, so this summer I started to walk barefoot, and I like it a lot, so I bought barefoot shoes Vivo and merrell, I love them a lot. But I am a classy woman, and I was looking for some classy boots, I found a pair from Shapen. They arrived today, It was a fail, the boots are way to wide, I have narrow feet, and I’m 1,56 km high so they were to large and right on my knees, so not ok for walking. I have skinny legs. Where cand I find narrow barefoot shoes for short people and skinny legs. Please help me, I don’t want to go back to my regular boots.
Hi Ema! I would recommend trying Groundies. The Camden for example has a narrow shaft and close fit. I’m also really liking the Tucson that is new this year (but I do find that it runs on the long side). Also the Salzburg would probably be a good fit for you! They’re my top recommendation for classy that is suitable for slim low volume feet (just stay away from their Barefoot+ models as those are extra wide fitting). Good luck!

I bought the Chukka boots from Gaucho Ninja because they have everything that I’m looking for, but I was surprised that the sole is so stiff… Now I need to decide if I should turn them back or not. If you have been using yours; do they become more flexible with time? At least the leather should get softer, but I don’t know if it’s enough?

They do! At first they were stiff and so my heel rubbed on the back of the boot but it’s definitely gotten more flexible with use. Don’t expect it to be floppy, but moderately flexible – yes.

Hmmm, A few options for you to consider are Nons Barefoot and The Drifter Leather – they have a few nice options. Others that are not quite as tall but taller than ankle height are the Ahinsa Jaya, Shapen Maverick, and Peerko Pulse.

I have complicated feet. I have used only barefoot shoes for years for dance exercise because they have kept my feet happy. Until this year I could wear wide toe box shoes with a small drop (I’ve lived in Hotter boots for years,) but even the slightest heel hurts my feet. I was recently diagnosed with joint hyper mobility in my feet and advised by 2 podiatrists to wear rigid soles to keep my feet stable, and I absolutely have to keep my toes from flexing (which makes life really interesting.) I’ve been wearing Birk’s, and my feet love them—I have a pair with a back strap for going outside, and a pair of slippers which I live in. I just read your piece on why they aren’t the best, and I need some boots for winter but I’m really struggling to find anything flat, with some cushion, and rigid.
Hi Laurel. If you are looking for rigid, Birkenstock is a good brand for that, so if you are already having success with that brand you might want to check out their boot line. There is also the Lems Chelsea Tuff – pretty rigid but nice looking for everyday wear. I have hypermobility in my feet too, and so I understand how painful and difficult to manage it can be.
