Your typical rain boots have a narrow pointy toe and chunky heel that can be super uncomfortable, and hard to walk in. Thankfully there are anatomically-friendly options available.
I’ve compiled here my recommended waterproof, water resistant, and rubber rain boots & shoes (for kids and adults) that don’t squish your toes.
Adult Waterproof Barefoot Shoes
Rubber Rain Boots
When it comes to rain boots, most of the options available for adults have clunky soles and pointy toe boxes. The options listed here are the most comfortable I’ve found, with space for your toes and a natural fit and feel.

Wildling Ranidae – This is the highest quality rain boot of the bunch. The toe box is also quite generous without being excessively floppy (so hard to do in rain boots!). They run a little long so size down if you’re between. You can get a one-time free shipping offer with code AWN_ANYA_S. If you’re outside the US/Canada, shop Wilding Shoes here.

Saguaro Brisk – Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 15% off. Comes in a fleece lined and unlined version. My favorite is the fleece lined. Great foot shape, flexible, comfy. They are a clear winner for me, albeit a thinner rubber that doesn’t feel as durable as Wildling’s boot.

Xero Shoes Gracie (women’s) –Discontinued and almost sold out. This is a cute chelsea style rubber rain boot, for little puddles. I loves them in bright yellow. Read my review here. For those in the EU, shop Xero Shoes EU here.
BONUS: Vaistoa Katve (EU only) – This Finnish brand only ships within Europe, but I have tested a sample and they are great! Good for those who need a taller cut, and they have an extra wide toe box shape.
And here are some additional options that don’t have quite as wide of a toe box as I prefer, but can work for slimmer feet.
- Women’s Asgard (AMAZON) – Packable, affordable rubber boots that check all the boxes, but do have a narrower toe box than I prefer. Read my Asgard review here.
- Bisgaard (women’s & kids) – These rubber boots are completely flat and flexible but only go up to a size 40. US/Canadian customers can get them from Pedterra and use code ANYASREVIEWS, and the rest of the world can search for a retailer on Bisgaard’s website. Wider than the Asgard above, but just a little bit narrow.
- Pokeboo Packable Rain Boots – Men’s and Women’s. These are pretty slim fitting.
Compromise Rain Boots: More minimalist than most conventional rain boots, but they might have a small heel rise, narrower toe box, and may be heavier and thicker than is typical for a barefoot shoe.
- Tretorn – Viken model is the flattest.
- Grundens – Multiple zero drop options, but the toe box is tapered.
- Urberg Men’s Orby
- Viking – Look for the flat models. Viking ships to the EU only, but this brand can also be found at Outnorth for international shipping.
- Muck Boot Company – The Forager model has a flat outsole
Fun fact, you can turn any rain boots into thermal ones with thick socks like these from Wildling Shoes! And I also highly recommend the use of leg warmers to get a secure fit without compromising on toe space (because pull on rain boots are not adjustable).
Waterproof/Resistant Shoes

While these are not your typical pull on rubber rain boots, these barefoot shoes are water resistant and practical for wet weather.
- Ahinsa Jaya Boots (vegan) – Use code ANYASREVIEWS for 10% off.
- Be Lenka Boots – Lots of great water resistant options! You can also order several of them them from Anya’s Shop in the US. If ordering from Be Lenka directly code ANYASREVIEWS give you 5% off (returns are only accepted from within the EU and USA). If you are outside the US, shop Be Lenka EU here.
- Chala Overshoe – 3 types for different waterproof covering needs. Use code 93D5B5E9 for 5% off

- Freet All Weather Shoes – Use code AnyaFreet for 10% a Freet purchase. If you live outside the USA, shop Freet here. See my thoughts about Freet in this post about The 10 Best Barefoot Hiking Boots.
- Lems Waterproof Collection – The Chelsea boot & Boulder Boot Grip come in waterproof. IMO these make excellent rain shoes and have served me very well over the years. Read all my Lems Reviews here. If you’re outside the US, shop Lems EU here.
- Neos Overshoe – This waterproof overshoe can be worn over other shoes or with a thick boot liner to become a warm waterproof rain boot.
- Realfoot – Super wide toe box shoes! They have a few waterproof models. Use code ANYASREVIEWS10 for 10% off. Read my Realfoot review here for all the details!
- Sole Runner (EU) – Several models labeled as being water-repellant, but I have minimal experience with them.
- Vivobarefoot – ANYASREVIEWS25OFF for 25% off. You can find there a variety of waterproof boots and shoes. Tracker FG and Primus Trail All Weather are my two favorites.
- Xero Shoes (vegan) – See my all my Xero Shoes reviews here. For shipping within the EU, shop Xero Shoes EU here
- Zaqq (vegan options) – A LOT of waterproof styles here. We have the waterproof Quintic seasonally at Anya’s Shop
- Wildling – The waterproofing on these is only effective up to the laces, so best for very shallow puddles and light rain. Use code AWN_ANYA_S for a one-time free shipping offer. If you are outside the US/Canada, use this Wildling Shoes link. To learn more about the options you can find all my previous Wildling reviews here.

How to Waterproof Your Shoes

Before we get to the waterproof barefoot shoe options, let’s discuss ways you can make use of the shoes you have. Keep in mind that treating your shoes with a waterproofing agent can change the way they look. Leather often gets significantly darker with impregnating waxes and can even change in texture. While these products are usually very effective, a shoe spray is a better alternative if you don’t want to change the way your shoes look.
Waterproofing Sprays, Waxes, & Creams
If working with suede, nubuck, or fabric I use waterproofing sprays because it’s less likely to change the look and texture of the material. Waxes & creams have to be rubbed into the shoe and are more likely to affect the look, but they are often more effective – best used on smooth leather/vegan leather products.
- Carbon Pro – The most effective without changing the material in any way! Works on everything, including vegan and fabrics
- Nano Tech Waterproof Leather Spray – Have not used myself, but it comes highly rated
- Nikwax Footwear Care
– This is an ecofriendly spray, but it does slightly alter the look of suede/nubuck
- Renapur Leather Balsam – This conditioner is a gentle waterproofer, not as effective as the other options. But really great for restoring the look of your shoes and increasing their longevity!
- Otter Wax – Works great
- Sno Seal – Very effective, but can really change the look of the leather (unless you are dealing with a glossy black to begin with).
Other Tricks/Gadgets
- Aquaseal – This is used to repair holes or seal up seams on your shoes!
- Neos Overshoe – This overshoe can be worn directly over your shoes to make them waterproof and slip-resistant (there are many retailers, so search around to find your size).
- Chala Overshoe – Available in 3 different varieties for year-round situations! Use code 93D5B5E9 for 5% off

Thanks a lot for this list, definitely useful, though cf someone else’s comment not sure anything here applies to work conditions, will test and see, but @ANYA I just wanted to share that it’s a shame in your reviews that there seems to be very little about the ethics behind the shoes. For me it’s a big deal, and I know also for many other bare-footers. Most of the brands of wellies here are made in China, often not very transparent on their websites, with very little clear info on sourcing and materials… I feel it would be worth commenting on these practices in the reviews on your site. Thanks in advance 🙂
Why, Oh, Why do a pair of injection moulded rubber, pvc, plastic or other waterproof petrochemical wonder boots cost $100 dollars …or more?!
Hi Tim, there are many things that go into the production of barefoot style shoes that might surprise you. For an in-depth look at the cost of barefoot shoes, I encourage you to read this article.
I found boots on amazon, and was wondering if you had reviewed them. They look to be zero drop, flexible, and have a wide toe box. They are also available in toddler sizes which not all boots are, and are a cheaper option.

Hello! We don’t have a dedicated review for those, but we have tried them and they are a decent affordable option for kids. They might have a little bit of toe spring, and definitely check for any heel lift if the insole is removable. Otherwise, enjoy splashing in puddles!
Hi! I absolutely love the idea Stonz has of getting rubber boots and then pairing them with a warm fleece liners to add extra warmth! I have four kids and it is often hard to justify buying rain boots and snow boots each year. I was wondering if there were other brands that did that too? Or just Stonz? Thank you!
Bisgaard has thermal lined rubber boots too!
Anyone tried https://naturcontact.co.uk/collections/all-barefoot-shoes/products/naturcontact-alaskan? Thanks 🙏🏻
We don’t have any first-hand experience with that brand.
The ANYA25FB 25% discount code doesn’t seem to work.
For Vivobarefoot it’s curently ANYA25VB, and I just tested it. It works on all full-priced products.
Hi Any, I am getting frustrated & could use some direction please. I’ve tried and have not been successful. I currently wear Lems Primal III sz.15 and they are a little small on the last 3 toes by the end of the day only wearing thin Injinji’s or Creeper socks.
I recently purchased and returned the Vivo Tracker Leather Low sz48. Beautiful shoes, awesome leather, fit good on my left foot but too short again on the last 3 toes of my right foot and felt the shoes had too low of volume. My foot shape is mountain & plateau.
Vivo Primus Trail II FG sz 49 way too long and sole design too narrow. Xero Glenn sz 15 too long and too narrow. Altra Lone Peaks, way too wide. Altra Supreme, too narrow. I can wear Altra Escalantes, I think the soft mesh allows them to work.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and would love to get a pair of waterproof shoes for rain and a little snow. Walking in town and on mild trails. But I am willing to settle and waterproof if needed. I thought I am not designed for the barefoot market and bought a pair of Keen boots. My back hurt & hips hurt as soon as I put them on and walked around the house.
I’d appreciate any recommendations. Thank you-
Glen
super helpful thanks
Can you review the new Reima Ankka barefoot rain boot? They just dropped! We LOVE Reima, such great quality. I also feel like the Taika rain boot they make is pretty close to zero drop. https://us.reima.com/products/barefoot-rain-boots-ankka
Hi Jen! We will look into those, thank you for your request.
Hello! I tried using your discount code for the Saguaro Brisk rain boots for kids but it didn’t seem to work? Am I still able to apply it to my order? Thank you!
Hi there, the code only works on full-priced items. So because the Brisk is on sale right now, the discount code doesn’t stack on top of it.
