How to Save on Kids Barefoot Shoes
As a money-conscious parent myself, I’ve grappled with how to affordably outfit my two active boys in healthy footwear. I don’t mess around with our feet, it’s barefoot shoes or no shoes in our house, so that means every single shoe on this list is zero drop (or at least can be with insole removed).
Nowadays my boys are spoiled with more than they need (perks of having a barefoot shoe blogger for a mom!), but a few years back we ran a tight ship when it came to their footwear. Here are a few of my tips for getting the most bang for your buck:
- Bookmark my Sales and Coupons page for an up-to-date list of all the current coupon codes, sales, and discounts!
- Buy the shoes they need, when they need them – I don’t stock up. Instead I plan on buying up to 3 pairs of shoes a year for my kids: Winter boots, Every day shoes, Water shoes/Sandals. This keeps me from splurging and possibly guessing incorrectly what size my child will be at a future point.
- If you buy expensive shoes, choose ones that can be passed on or sold. My favorites shoes that are durable enough to be passed down are Vivobarefoot and Be Lenka.
- Check secondhand sites like Facebook for used shoes (great for expensive items like boots).
- Get the Right Size – See the next section!

How To Pick the Right Size
- Measure at the time you’re ordering shoes (don’t use old measurements).
- Take into account shipping time – if there’s going to be a wait, expect your kids’ feet to grow
- If they’re going to wear socks in their shoes, measure their feet with them on.
- Measure twice!! Just do it. It’s better than ordering the wrong size.

Hi Nicole! Not all Pediped styles are barefoot friendly. They informed us that their sneaker soles are only zero drop with the insole removed (and the toe box isn’t very wide, it’s more symmetrically rounded). The Grip N Go line is their best option.
Manitobah Mukluks for winter boots! They are the warmest (good in -40*C) and wide toe box , zero drop, and very flexible soles.

Thanks for all the helpful information! How is the Plae Sam sandal for width? I know on the Plae sneaker review, you mentioned they were on the narrower side, so wasn’t sure if the sandal is the same. I’m looking for a Keene type sandal (closed toe and athletic) but having a hard time.

Hi Nicole! My toddler wore the Sam sandals many years ago and they had the same sole and width as the sneakers. I just saw a new sandal from Koel (called the Madison) like you’re describing. You can see them at retailer Mugavik.
Would love to hear a review of GroFive sandals! Best I can tell they are zero drop, wide toe box, and flexible sole and getting 5 sizes out of one pair has been great for our budget!

Your feedback is always so helpful! Wondering your thoughts on the Merrell Trail Glove for big kids. I see that it’s minimalist but wasn’t sure if it would be similar to a plae sneaker with width. We like the more athletic looking sneakers but it’s harder to find at a more affordable price.

Hi! The Merrell Trail Glove for kids is both wider in the toe box, and a lot more flexible than Plae shoes. They’re a good option!

Hi Rosie! Livie & Luca has some models on their “honeycomb sole” with a wider-than-conventional square shaped toe box, but none are zero drop. They all have at least a small heel lift integrated directly into the outsole itself, so removing the insole won’t change it. If toe space is the most important characteristic you’re after then they’re pretty good for that.

Having a major issue with the xero prio shoes – my kids love them but they wear them to school on a daily basis- these shoes are barely making 3 months and the then the rubber is separating from the sole…. This is happening on all three boys shoes- I can’t afford to be buying three new pairs of shoes every three months – do you have any suggestions of a good quality shoe that looks like traditional shoes that won’t fall apart?
hmmmm, we have had really good luck with our Vivo and Be Lenka shoes but they are pretty pricey (however we get a full year out of them, so don’t have to buy many shoes). My kids also really love the Saguaro shoes, and even though they get hashed they keep wearing them for quite some time. It might end up being cheaper to replace those a couple of times a year than to replace more expensive ones.

I purchased WateLves because I loved the style and the price was within our budget, however they didn’t fit him well, he is high-volume ( he feet are chubby at the top and he sometimes curls his toes when he stands) what brand can you recommend. I live in Canada. We had magical for their summer shoes however, they were destroyed. We love the outdoors. Is Reima Lightweight Breathable Barefoot Shoes – Astelu high volume? Thank you
They have a removable insole and the uppers are soft and stretchy, so for us they worked well for all foot volumes. My son with medium volume feet is wearing them with the insole and with added knots in the elastic laces to tighten them. But Samantha’s child with wide, high volume feet can wear them as is. I just wrote about them in my newsletter yesterday because they have more reliable inventory now – we really like them!
